Gems are cut in cities that have forged a reputation for their skill in this field.Traditionally, diamonds are cut in Antwerp and Tel-Aviv, to which one can add New York (specializing in large stones) and Bombay (for small stones). For colored stones, all the producer-countries operate their own cutting workshops (Brazil, Madagascar, Vietnam). Other centers do however enjoy an international reputation: Bogota (Colombia) and Jaipur (India) for emeralds, Bangkok (Thailand) and Sri Lanka for rubies and sapphires, and Idar-Oberstein (Germany) for other colored stones.
