AMETHYST
This variety of quartz, the color of which varies varies from lilac to deep purple, has a legend. In it, the young nymph Amethyst (literally, “a remedy for drunkenness”) is transformed by Diana into a cold crystal to protect her against the unwanted advances of a drunken Bacchus. Once sober, and furious at Diana’s action, the god of wine emptied his cup over the crystal which turned violet in color.This legend has inspired amethyst’s reputation as a means of warding off drunkenness. It is traditionally chosen to adorn the bishop’s Episcopal ring.Amethyst was particularly fashionable during the reign of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, who had a particular fondness for the color lilac.
