GRAIN
This word can have different meanings in jewelry terminology.
It refers to a unit of weight for fine pearls, one grain being equivalent to a quarter of a carat or 0.05 grams.
The grain is also a shaving of metal lifted from the mount then bent around a stone to secure it in place, a technique known as a “grain setting” or “millegrain setting”. Cartier used this setting in the early twentieth century to set diamonds in platinum.
