MOONSTONE

The most precious member of the feldspar group. A translucent milky white, its shimmering silvery or pearly aspect is known as adularescence (after the Adula mountain group in the Swiss Alps where this gem was first found.). Best served by a cabochon cut, its pale blue tint and sheen, reminiscent of moonlight, were particularly appreciated by the Art Nouveau style. According to legend, the steps leading up to the Moon temple of Anuradhapura (Ceylon, twelfth century) were adorned with moonstone mosaics. It is still possible to visit the ruins of this temple.Double silicate of aluminium and potassium. Hardness: 6. Birthstone of the month of June. Symbol of love.
