PRECIOUS STONE
A selected specimen of any valuable gemstone that is sufficiently rare, beautiful and lasting to be used in jewelry. Generally speaking, precious stones are transparent or translucent.
In France, a decree issued on November 29, 1968 restricts the use of the term “precious” to just four stones: the diamond, the ruby, the sapphire and the emerald. Other gems are called fine stones.
